Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
