The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive instances β not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing β came earlier this autumn. Over the span of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to construct it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse β the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and growing, and this week research projected his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted β genuinely, no former commander would have imagined β solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the leader seek toι’ θ¦ the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. This includes individuals like us β in older age cohorts almost a majority β who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; instead, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished β not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the other cheek β not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer him your sweater too.
The evident and direct truth that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down β Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.

The nation is most protected, in other words, through connection to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended by reference to that which renders it distinctive and magnificent, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it imply pretending the most negative of both America and Christian faith never occurred; it signifies both meekness and belief, a combination that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
