The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show draws close, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
