A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
